Spain Bank Holidays 2019

Bank holidays (Red days) or as they are know in Spain “Fiestas”,  translates as “feast” but is synonymous with “party”.

There are National fiestas, Regional Fiestas and Local Fiestas. So it depends where you are in Spain as to what the bank holiday days will be. Local fiestas are normally on the patron saint’s day of the town (Municipality).

Puentes – Literally “Bridge”.

In addition to the fiestas it’s common practice for people to take bridge the fiesta day and the weekend. For example if a fiesta falls on a Thursday, many people take the Friday off work in order to create a four day holiday.  Likewise if the fiesta day falls on a Tuesday, people will take off the Monday to “bridge” the gap. The 6th and the 8th of December are both fiestas and it’s very common for people take the 7th off and this is known as the “puente de la constituition / puente de la inmaculada”.

Most fiestas are on fixed days,  falling on the same day every year.

Some fiestas, such as Easter move days.
