Spain to launch 60€ monthly travel pass

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has announced the introduction of a nationwide transport pass starting next January. The pass will cost 60 euros per month and will allow unlimited travel on commuter trains, medium-distance rail services, and state-run buses. Young people under the age of 26 will pay a reduced fee of 30 euros per month. The government also confirmed that existing public transport discounts will be extended throughout 2026.

The measures will be approved at the final Cabinet meeting of the year so they can take effect in January. Although the idea of a single transport pass had already been presented earlier this year, the government had not yet confirmed its price or launch date.

According to Sánchez, the initiative represents a firm commitment to sustainable transport and to supporting middle- and working-class citizens.

The Spanish pass is inspired by Germany’s Deutschlandticket, which offers nationwide access to all public transport for 63 euros per month, excluding high-speed rail. In Spain, the initial version will cover non–high-speed Renfe trains and long-distance buses, as these fall under state authority. The government is encouraging regional and local administrations to join the scheme so that urban transport systems, such as metros, trams, and city buses, can also be included.

Sánchez estimated that around two million people would benefit from lower commuting costs, with some regular travelers saving close to 60% on their monthly transport expenses.

In addition, the government will extend current transport subsidies, though specific details have yet to be announced. At present, many urban and intercity passes receive a 40% discount, while young people benefit from even larger reductions on medium-distance trains and state-run bus services.
