Rueda

Located in Castilla y León, Rueda is a Denominación de Origen (DO) known for producing white wines, particularly from the Verdejo grape. Officially recognized as a DO in 1980, the region has become closely associated with clean, aromatic white wines shaped by its climate and terrain.

Winemaking in Rueda dates back to the Middle Ages. Verdejo, the region’s signature grape, is thought to have been introduced during the Reconquista. Historically, Rueda was known for oxidatively aged wines called “Dorado,” which played a notable role in local trade and consumption for centuries.

Terroir and Climate

Rueda’s vineyards are planted on a high plateau at elevations between 600 and 800 meters. The area experiences a continental climate with hot summers, cold winters, and significant temperature variation between day and night. The soils are typically stony and well-drained, encouraging the development of grapes with good acidity and aromatic complexity.

Grape Varieties and Wine Styles

Verdejo dominates plantings in Rueda, accounting for most of the region’s production. Other authorized white varieties include Sauvignon Blanc, Viura, and Palomino Fino. More recently, international varieties like Chardonnay and Viognier have also been permitted.

Key wine styles include:

  • Rueda Verdejo: Typically light-bodied with citrus and herbal notes and a slight bitter finish.
  • Rueda Espumoso: Sparkling wines made mainly from Verdejo or Sauvignon Blanc.
  • Gran Vino de Rueda: Wines from older vines, intended to reflect greater concentration and complexity.
  • Rueda Dorado: A traditional, oxidized white wine aged for a minimum period and fortified to achieve higher alcohol content.

  • Bodegas José Pariente – A family estate focused on precision and varietal expression.
  • Marqués de Riscal – A Rioja-based producer with a significant Rueda operation specializing in both fresh and oak-aged whites.
  • Bodegas Naia – Concentrates on single-vineyard and terroir-driven Verdejo.
